 Discreet Breastfeeding

Is it possible to breastfeed without exposing myself?

Definitely! Nursing wear is designed solely for the purpose of discreet nursing. Alternatively, wear a front-buttoned shirt, and unbutton from the bottom (not the top). Don't worry about flashing your cute soft belly, because chances are, your baby would be covering it if you're nursing him in the cradle hold. Draping a burp cloth or blanket over your shoulder also helps.

Of course, a nursing shirt is not an absolute necessity, but why take chances with getting unwanted attention or running into another breastfeeding discussion you'd rather avoid (certainly, educating the less-informed about breastfeeding is a good thing, but just be sure to be diplomatic. No one really wants to turn it into a debate). Last but not least, practice nursing in front of a mirror before the actual outing, until you're comfortable that you're not exposing yourself.

How to Breastfeed Discreetly

Hunger cues
1. Pay attention to your baby's hunger cues. Pursing of lips, sucking of his hands or fingers, or crying, are some signs of hunger. To check if he's hungry, I usually touch (sort of tease) the corner of his mouth, to see if he tries to follow it. If he does, he's usually either hungry or wants to suckle. Don't wait until he wails, because this will only draw unwanted attention to yourself.

2. Hold baby close to you. Casually reach under your shirt to unhitch your bra (assuming you're wearing a nursing bra). The more cool you are about it, the less people would notice.

Latch hungry baby

3. Lift your shirt just enough to reveal your breast to your hungry baby, and latch! While latching, you may like to turn away to a different direction, for added privacy. Our nursing openings provide sufficient coverage to make discreet nursing so easy. In most cases, no one would even know you are nursing your baby.

 4. There, latched! Happy baby, relieved mommy (whew!). All you need is one attempt at nursing in public, to realize that it's really not as nerve-racking as it seems. Your discreet breastfeeding mission is accomplished.
